Travelex Travel Max
We purchased Travelex trip insurance for our trip to Canada last summer. On the 7th day of our 19 day trip, my husband fell while hiking in Newfoundland. Parks Canada staff were phenomenal, as well as the paramedics who came to the scene to assess his situation. We were 5 km in on the trail, and there was question about how we were going to get back to the trail head and get him to the medical attention he needed. He was carried out using a wheelbarrow-like apparatus to a clearing along the trail where a helicopter was waiting to take us to the closest medical facility. Diagnosis: completely torn quadriceps muscle. Luckily, we were told that Mr. Trudeau would be covering the cost of the helicopter, but I was not worried because we had trip insurance. I saved all the receipts from the doctor and emergency room, as well as the medications and apparatus we needed to purchase (a knee immobilizer). We contacted Travelex and they offered to help us if we chose to interrupt our trip-however, even though the trip would be a very different one than we had planned, we chose to continue to the end. I submitted the required forms, along with all of the original receipts when we returned, and within a few week's time, we received our refund. Travelex was great to work with!!

Because I waited until the day I left to purchase the insurance, my choices were limited and I had to pay more. Next time I will purchase it more in advance.

I have learned that I should purchase travel insurance within 30 days to avoid paying a higher rate to insure against any pre-existing conditions.

Thank you for your feedback on the policy. Typically, the most cost effective plans offering the pre-existing conditions waiver are available with 10-21 days after making your initial deposit. You will also need to meet a set of criteria outlined by the travel insurance company: insure the full non-refundable cost of the trip, and be medically able to travel when you purchase the policy.

Travelex Travel Max
We purchased the insurance plan on 04/25/2014 to prepare our trip but the travel date was 06/18/2014. With that date, we were not qualified for the existing condition medical option. This should not be. The reason we bought the plan earlier was just the planning purpose only. It was not to trick the system. Hopefully this criteria will be eliminated in the future. If not it should not allow customer to purchase the plan until the right condition or criteria met first. We were disappointed for this feature.

Thank you for your feedback on the policy. For the travel insurance providers who offer the pre-existing conditions waiver, they all typically require the insured to:
    1) purchase the policy within 10-30 days after making your initial trip payment/deposit.
    2) insure 100% of thr pre-paid and non-refundable trip cost.
    3) travelers must be medically fit to travel at the time they purchase the plan

Enrollment was easy and cost was reasonable. Terms and conditions were "vague" - not enough information as to "what IS and what IS NOT" covered with repect to injuries resulting from recreational activities such as "normal" downhill skiing, etc.. Nor did I see available "coverage enhancement" options listed. I would probably shop around next time (I was short on time this occasion).

We were fortunate to not have to make a claim but I found the booking process to be quick, easy, and seamless. Looking back, the cost seemed to be on the high side but still well within a "reasonable" cost to ensure full coverage while outside of the USA. Based on this, I would look into using this plan again on a return trip to Alberta.

Did not need the insurance. But was worth it for the comfort. Our insurance did not cover us in Canada.
