What is a Virtual Cruise?
Virtual cruising, much like other forms of virtual tourism, is an online way to connect with your favorite cruise ships, entertainment, and excursions through the internet.
As we practice social distancing, many cruise lines have made their signature offerings available to an online audience. Virtual travelers can explore walkthroughs of ships, watch musical performances, or take an online excursion through remote parts of the world – all from the comfort of home.
There is a plethora of information and experiences for curious cruisers to search online, and the options available are constantly changing. We provide an overview of some of our favorite online cruise offerings in this article but encourage you to explore your favorite cruise lines and performers to enjoy a taste of cruise life without having to leave the dock.
Online Cruises & Virtual Sailing Tours
While we practice social distancing, many would-be travelers are daydreaming of their perfect cruise vacation. But being landlocked doesn’t mean we can’t find ways to enjoy our favorite parts of cruise life without having to pack a bag. Virtual cruises, sometimes referred to as “ecruises,” present a multitude of opportunities to enjoy a taste of life on the high seas, and a little creativity can take that even further.
One of the most comprehensive ways to experience cruise magic from home is through virtual cruise videos. Featuring multiple ships and ports of call, would-be cruisers can get an overview of the ship, service, entertainment, and food featured onboard. These videos can be a great planning tool for those interested in an upcoming experience or can provide a source of joy for those missing their last vacation.
Many cruise lines will also livestream from webcams onboard, particularly while in operation, for the enjoyment of current cruise views at any time.
Entertainment Options
Broadway-style shows and interactive live entertainment are regular parts of a cruise vacation, and often a highlight of the trip. An easy way to bring some of these incredible live theater performances into your own living room is by using online services such as BroadwayHD, Shakespeare’s Globe series, or the Metropolitan Opera. While these services sometimes charge a fee for access, many are offering free subscriptions or trials during this time of social distancing. Interested in cruise classes or special speakers? Programs like TED Talks or MasterClass feature an array of presenters who can make an experience both entertaining and educational.
More specific to the sea, cruise lines have been creative in sharing their entertainment options online. Holland America Line has launched “Lincoln Center Living Room,” which brings performers from their floating Lincoln Center Stage directly to your at-home theater. And Viking Cruise Line has even launched its own online channel with Viking.tv offering daily livestream sessions, documentaries, classical music concerts, and more. With scheduled themes such as Music Mondays and Guest Speaker Thursdays, there is something offered for every taste. Even your favorite cruise crews are still working to entertain, like in the Fred Olsen Cruise Line newsletter The Bridge, where the crew performs a moving rendition of “Heal the World” from home.
For a more interactive experience, we suggest exploring social media outlets like YouTube and Facebook Live to discover a plethora of unique at-home entertainment specially designed for an online audience.
If interactive quizzes or game shows are more your speed, remote bingo games, trivia or karaoke contents are taking place across social media, hosted by entertainers at popular tourism destinations. You can also be your own MC by putting together a group of friends and family on a virtual hangout service like Google Hangouts or Zoom.
Feeling crafty? The crew from Cruise and Maritime Voyages’ Vasco de Gama provide a towel folding demonstration so you can even recreate those adorable towel animals for your own home!
Cruise-Inspired Cuisines and Cocktails
Cruise ships are often renowned for their incredible dining experiences, ranging from fine dining to expansive buffets to creative bar bites. For some at-home entertainment, some chefs have shared their secret ingredients with Cruise Critic and made their popular recipes available to try out in your own kitchen. Some of our favorites include Carnival’s Warm Chocolate Melting Cake, Norwegian’s Macadamia Nut Hummus with Roasted Pineapple Relish, and Holland America’s Bread and Butter Pudding with Vanilla Sauce.
Crystal Cruise Line has launched Crystal@Home, offering “global discoveries with familiar faces to tide us over the coming days.” Their cooking at home series features longtime Crystal culinary partner Chef Jon Ashton as he demos recipes inspired by favorite guest dishes.
If you are more in the mood for a beverage, Cruise Critic has developed a list of the 11 best cruise ship cocktails, complete with recipes. You can also subscribe to Silversea’s email series, ‘To the Curious,’ which features special cocktail-making classes with barman Alex for six new drink recipes a week. All of the cocktails featured are created for their SALT (Sea and Land Taste) bar, scheduled to launch later this year on their new ship Silver Moon.
Exploring Ports of Call
Virtual travel allows would-be travelers to explore all parts of the world, and with a little bit of research, your favorite port of call is only a few clicks away. Explore and adventure in America’s national parks, offering a wide array of online experiences to satisfy your inner nature lover. Get inspired on a walking tour through the top 10 virtual museums, unlocking a plethora of information with each stop. Take a virtual dive while staying dry with the National Marine Sanctuaries.
If you are looking for a little more adventure, Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic have teamed up to offer their Virtual Expedition program. Each week armchair explorers can set sail on a different cruise to the most remote, untamed, and fascinating places on the planet.
Not one to always get off the ship when in port? Cruise Critic features a list of popular port webcams which includes docked views of destinations including Juneau, Key West, Aruba, and more.
Treat Yourself to a Spa Day
No reservation required! A spa day may be a splurge when vacationing, but many are finding that turning their home bathroom into a personal relaxation spot is tremendously helpful when managing stress. Simple pleasures like lighting a candle, relaxing with a mask, or indulging with a bath bomb are all easy and affordable ways to incorporate a little luxury into your normal routine. A little extra pampering for your hands and nails may also be in order, particularly after increased hand washing.
Staying Social
Social distancing may require physical distance but thanks to a number of virtual platforms it is easy to stay connected with the cruise community. Web-based cruise message boards, Zoom meetings, social media, Google Hangouts, and chat tools are just a few of the many ways technology connects with friends old and new to open discussion about your preferred travel plans.
Plan for the Future
While it may not be time to embark on a new cruise adventure just yet, planning for a trip can be almost as exciting of an experience as the journey itself. With so many options to consider for your next cruise vacation, now is a great time to research options and decide on the agenda for your next trip. Cruises offer a multitude of choices, sail to destinations all over the world, aboard vessels of all sizes, with itineraries and adventures tailored to meet the wanderlust of every unique traveler. Protection for your travel, particularly a multi-leg voyage like a cruise, is an important consideration, with coverage options like missed connection, medical evacuation, and baggage loss available with certain comprehensive policies.
Many Americans are rethinking their travel plans this year and looking for alternatives to traditional travel. One emerging trend in tourism is the renewed interest in road trips. Road tripping, whether with family, friends, or solo, offers adventurists new experiences without the hassle of flying. Road trips can also help stretch conservative travel budgets much further, especially with lower gasoline prices. We know that travelers are itching to get back out there, so we’ve compiled a list of the most scenic road trips in America. The list includes both long and short drives in locations all over the country to provide options and inspiration for those planning to take a road trip vacation. If you think we’ve missed any scenic drives or would like to make another suggestion, please leave a comment below. We hope that these U.S. road trip ideas help inspire your next getaway.
Planning a Fall or Winter Road Trip in the U.S.
Each of the following road trips outlined below includes our suggestions for the “Best Time to Go.” Using this information, travelers can plan their trip for the optimal season and experience each location in all its glory. While many of these trips are recommended for spring and summer, some are also great options for fall and winter. For example, Hana Highway in Hawaii and Florida’s Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys could be ideal routes for autumn or holiday road trips. If you’re interested in “leaf-peeping” to view stunning fall foliage, we recommend the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire and Route 6 in Massachusetts during September and October.
Even more adventurous road trippers can embrace the cold and plan a winter trek. The Olympic Peninsula Loop in Washington is open during the winter months and offers stunning views when blanketed in fresh white snow. The same can be said for Scenic Byway 12 in Utah. There is nothing quite like snowcapped red rocks! Travelers may also consider adding some other winter activities, like skiing or snowmobiling, into their trip. Utah and Washington both offer plenty of options for winter sports that are not far from the outlined road trip route.
As with any road trip, it’s important to plan ahead. In some cases, popular routes like Trail Ridge Road in Colorado are closed during the winter months. Travelers will also want to make sure their vehicles are prepared to handle harsh weather and road conditions, and that additional supplies are packed. This is especially important when traveling long stretches of roadway where the weather could deteriorate without many options to restock. Additionally, road trippers must take into account any travel restrictions imposed by states due to the pandemic before hitting the road.
Blue Ridge Parkway
If you’ve ever wanted to visit the Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah National Parks, the Blue Ridge Parkway is the ideal way to do it. The 469-mile stretch of road winds through Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina and showcases the Appalachian Mountains in all their glory. Similarly, the plentiful and unique wildlife makes the route ideal for birdwatchers and animal enthusiasts.

There are plenty of opportunities for hiking, swimming, and sightseeing. Trail Ridge Road
Trail Ridge Road carves through the Rockies in Colorado and serves as the main route in Rocky Mountain National Park. In fact, it is the only continually paved road in the U.S. at such a high elevation (over 12,000 feet). Because Trail Ridge Road takes road trippers so high up, the views are unlike anywhere else. Wildlife is plentiful too, so bighorn sheep, elk, and moose can be spotted in the distance right from the car. Most travelers start their journey in Estes Park, which is a mountainside tourist town with excellent shopping, restaurants, and fun for the kids. Estes Park is also home to the Stanley Hotel, which famously served as the inspiration for Steven King’s The Shining. Our advice is to pack some warm clothing in the car even if it’s a beautiful day in Estes Park because once you get to the top, the tundra can be 30 or more degrees colder.

The unique landscape is made up of sandhills, which are grass-covered sand dunes. These sandhills are home to migratory birds, most notably the Sandhill Crane, as well as many other Great Plains animals. As a result, this road trip route is a favorite among birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The wide-open spaces let you see for miles, which is especially great at night for stargazing. The Best Virtual Tours
Within this article, we explore numerous virtual tour options you can enjoy from the comfort of your living room. By inputting each attraction (and ‘virtual tour’ succeeding it) into Google Keyword Planner we found the number of searches for each month from March 2019 to March 2020. Then we subtracted the total number of searches for March 2020 (when social distancing became a global phenomenon) by the total number of searches for February 2020, to assess the increase due to social distancing.

Methodology
Each data point consists of the latest research available from reputable sources. All sources are destination-specific level data points. The data was standardized using minmax normalization. The minmax normalization value is multiplied by 10 to create a score (between 0-10). A score of 10 is always the best result, while a score of 0 is the worst. Each destination is then ranked on their overall rating across all family-friendly data points, to find which beach destination is the most family-friendly.
The destination which originally ranked in third was removed from the data set due to recent violent news in the area.

Mardi Gras is one of the most famous celebrations in the United States, with revelers from all over the world traveling to New Orleans to take part in the festivities. With proper planning, it can be a safe and appropriate event for travelers of all ages. A little bit of research in advance goes a long way when planning your visit to the Big Easy.
When Should I Plan to Travel for Mardi Gras?
Carnival season actually begins with the Feast of the Epiphany, also known as King’s Day. Most people commonly think of Fat Tuesday when they hear Mardi Gras and New Orleans, which is actually the end of the season and is always the day before Ash Wednesday. The most popular time to visit New Orleans is the extended weekend before Mardi Gras. For visitors looking specifically to partake in the final days of Carnival and Fat Tuesday, you’ll want to arrive in New Orleans no later than the Saturday before Mardi Gras day and stay through Ash Wednesday.
When is the Best Time to Book Mardi Gras Accommodations?
Most hotels conveniently located in the Central Business District and French Quarter require a minimum stay of five nights and most fill up by December. Consider vacation rental options like Airbnb, HomeAway, and VRBO for additional options. If booking a vacation rental, protect yourself against out-of-pocket expenses by purchasing vacation rental damage insurance. And transportation can be challenging during Mardi Gras, so be sure to take that into account when booking.
What is the Best Way to Get to Mardi Gras?
During Mardi Gras weekend, the French Quarter is closed to vehicular traffic. Only residents and hotel guests with special parking passes can get by the police barricades. If you are driving, travelers are encouraged to arrive early, but be advised that off-site lots can be expensive and fill quickly. If you can find public parking, take care not to double-park or park in driveways, on medians (also knowns as “neutral grounds”), in front of hydrants, within 20 feet of curb corners, far from the curb, or on the parade route within three hours of a parade. Your car will get towed and/or you’ll receive a hefty fine.
Public transportation in New Orleans is challenging during Carnival season, with bus and streetcar routes/schedules often changing due to closed or crowded streets. Hotel shuttles often encounter these same issues and many do not provide transportation during Mardi Gras.
The best way to get around New Orleans during Mardi Gras is on foot or by bicycle. If traveling by bike, be cautious in large crowds and always remember to lock your bike up to prevent theft.
Travelers are advised to get a map of the city and study the areas you’ll be visiting. New Orleans is a “checkerboard city” – safe neighborhoods can be within blocks of unsafe areas.
If staying at a hotel, remember that your concierge or front desk can help you with advice, parade route times, traffic alerts, and parking suggestions.
Are There Family Friendly Mardi Gras Celebrations?
For the younger audience, Family Gras is a two-day celebration just outside the raucous of downtown New Orleans. With crowds surpassing 80,000 each year, it’s big family fun that captures the spirit of Carnival. Families can enjoy Mardi Gras parades, authentic New Orleans cuisine, and free outdoor concerts by both national and local artists. Past performers include big names like Taylor Swift and Wilson Philips.
It is our advice to avoid the French Quarter with children. The full-size parades do not pass through this area and it is where the ‘beads get thrown’ at the more mature celebrations.
A good place to spot the parades is where they begin on St. Charles Avenue near Napoleon. Parades can last until 11 p.m., and if you view them further down the route, your little ones may not make it that far past bedtime. The Garden District portion of St. Charles is an area where you will see many families taking in the sites and sounds of Carnival.
If you put your child on your shoulders so they can catch special throws from the costumed riders in the parade, use extra caution. The crowds can swell forward suddenly and unexpectedly, potentially knocking you and your child over. Also, make sure your children do not get too close to the floats when reaching for throws.
What are the Mardi Gras Parade Routes & Rules?
If you’re looking for a taste of the festivities but the Bourbon Street parties are not your style, the city has multiple parades throughout the season. The official parade schedule helps to detail locations and shows that will quench your thirst for this New Orleans tradition.
The weekend before Fat Tuesday hosts the Bacchus and Endymion parades. When you think Mardi Gras and search for online images, chances are that the pictures are from these events, two of the biggest parades of the season! Orpheus, another big parade, steps to the streets on the Monday night before Fat Tuesday, while the Zulu Lundi Gras festival goes on all day.
As with any well-attended celebration, there are rules that must be followed. Travelers are advised to know them before arriving. The Mardi Gras parade rules passed by the New Orleans City Council are as follows:
No ladders or other personal effects, like grills and coolers, may be closer than 6 feet to the curb.
Parking on Napoleon and St. Charles is prohibited on BOTH sides of the neutral ground (not just the parade side) starting 2 hours before the parade.
There is a ban on roping off territory via chairs, tarps, or anything else if you are in the public right of way. This includes neutral ground.
There can be no private portable toilets in the neutral ground or other public property.
Travel Safety Tips for Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is a fun and exciting time in New Orleans. But like all major carnivals, street fairs, and festivals, attendees should remember that large crowds of people can also increase the possibility of accidents and petty crimes.
Travel Insurance is recommended for Mardi Gras attendees to protect against the unexpected. Even with proper planning, you may find yourself having to file a travel insurance claim. Here are a few tips about the claims process to help if you need to navigate it.
Document your belongings. It’s much easier to show your insurance company the value of any lost or stolen belongings if you have a record of what you’ve packed. One smart and simple way to do this is to photograph the contents of your suitcase before you depart. Anything that’s of particular value should also be photographed separately, and if you have a receipt for it, take a photo of that, too – just in case you lose the original documentation.
Ask for records.Whether it’s a police report to help you document a theft or a medical record that shows the treatment of an injury, make sure to ask for these documents upfront. Too often, travelers think they’ll contact the police department or the hospital after they’ve returned home, and end up mired in endless red tape, phone calls, and emails, sometimes to no avail. Don’t leave the premises until you have your requested documents firmly in hand or have made what you feel is a suitable arrangement to receive them.
Don’t invalidate your claim. Travel insurance providers can deny a claim if it is the result of something that occurs while the insured is under the influence of alcohol, using recreational drugs, or engaged in a crime. This falls under the category of using your street smarts, but it bears repeating: Don’t over imbibe, and don’t get caught up in something you’ll later regret. While having your travel insurance claim rejected may be the least of your worries under the circumstances, it could certainly add insult to injury.
Remember that if you need to file a claim, you should contact your travel insurance provider directly using the information provided on our Claims and Assistance page.
Above all, travel safely, and don’t forget to order your King Cake. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Cruising the Western Seaboard
The United States is home to many beautiful and diverse cruise destinations. The Western Seaboard is a shining example of these incredible destinations, with Alaska and the West Coast offering an array of beautiful coastlines and unique experiences. These destinations often offer a more tranquil, relaxing vacation. A west coast cruise is a perfect vacation option for those looking for scenic views of beautiful mountains, to explore renowned wineries, or wish to sightsee massive glaciers and wildlife.
Which Cruise Lines Sail Along the West Coast?
Most of the major cruise lines are represented along the West Coast including Carnival, Disney, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and others.
When is the Best Time to Cruise the West Coast?
The Western Seaboard refers to the west coast of the United States and includes the states of California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. These states are diverse in climate with cruise ports located all along the coast. Therefore, you should consider your cruise’s itinerary of stops before determining the best time to cruise.
Favorable weather makes the West Coast home to multiple wine regions in California, Oregon, and Washington State. The textbook best time to visit is in the harvest season, taking place in September and October. Many west coast cruises visiting at this time will offer passengers excursions to take part in the local festivities. However, you may consider traveling in the winter, which is less busy than the summer and fall, for a more peaceful experience. In the spring the vines and wildflowers start to bloom, as do the crowds. Summer and fall are the busiest seasons in this region, with fall foliage appearing by November.
The Pacific Northwest is best to visit late spring through early fall, as the famously overcast skies clear for a few months of favorable weather. Temperatures are the most comfortable and this is the best time to view local wildlife. However, visiting off-season for a less crowded cruise is certainly an option, as temperatures are mild year round in this region of the country.
The best time to visit Alaska is between May – September, and is covered in further detail in another article. Read about Alaskan cruises
While Hawaii is not technically part of the Western Seaboard, many cruises from the west coast ports travel there. If you are considering a Hawaiian cruise, the best time to travel is late spring (April – early June). Spring cruises see better weather as this is the first part of the dry season. Also, as it is one of two shoulder seasons, there is often a drop in fares, and the cruise ships are typically less crowded.
For those looking for a scenic cruise along the coastline of the Western Seaboard have several options when it comes to which port to depart from. Port locations in California can be found in Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. West coast cruise ports are also located in places such as Astoria, OR; Seattle, WA; and Honolulu, HI. Internationally, Vancouver, BC is also a popular port location for west coast cruises. River cruises are also available along the West Coast, with popular ports in Portland, OR; Clarkston, WA; and Sacramento, CA, among many others.
How Far Off the West Coast Do Cruise Ships Sail?
Most of the cruise lines will have itineraries that travel to domestic ports, like Honolulu, San Diego, and Seattle. Some Pacific cruises go as far as Alaskan ports like Seward and Whittier. However, some do travel to international destinations like Canada and Mexico, so be sure to triple check your itinerary before booking if you plan to leave your passport at home.
Where Can I Find the Best Deals on West Coast Cruises?
You may have heard the phrase “wave season.” Wave season refers to the time of the year when the cruise industry offers discounted rates, usually from mid-January through mid-March. These deals make it the most popular time for cruisers to book their trips. The types of offers and discounts will vary by destination and cruise line.
Best Things to See While Cruising the Western Seaboard
The Pacific coastline offers scenic views of luxurious beaches and interesting cities ready to be explored. Certain Pacific cruise itineraries also include visits to wine country. These itineraries offer a much more relaxing vacation, as opposed to the slightly overwhelming pace of cities found in the Caribbean.
California cruises are perfect for families hoping to spot celebrities in Hollywood or to spend the day at Universal Studios. Cruisers can also explore Getty Center, which displays antiquities and breathtaking art. San Francisco is a great destination because of their high-quality restaurants, historic museums, and world-class shopping centers.
Seattle is one of the top walking cities in the country, with a plethora of popular spots a short distance from the cruise port. Cruisers looking for a cup of coffee can grab a drink at the first Starbucks location, located in Pike Place Market.
Astoria, OR is a picturesque town of less than 10,000 people with a rich history and charming local traditions.
Cruises departing from Victoria, British Columbia provide exciting excursions surrounding ocean wildlife exploration.
Pacific coast cruises offer a wide variety of locations and experiences, so be sure to check your itinerary and do your research to identify your must-dos before heading into your west coast cruise. If one particular activity or excursion is your main reason for taking a cruise, you may want to consider a cruise insurance policy that includes Pre-Paid Excursion Reimbursement. This coverage will provide a one-time reimbursement, up to the limit on your confirmation, for pre-paid, non-refundable activity expenses that you have lost. This coverage is available in most states.

The United States is home to many beautiful cruise destinations, with an expansive selection of itineraries departing from and traveling along the Eastern Seaboard. Famous for stunning fall foliage, picturesque towns, and historic lighthouses, the Atlantic Coast offers over two thousand miles of shoreline for domestic cruisers to enjoy without having to pack a passport. For cruisers interested in exploring cosmopolitan cities, Boston, MA and New York, NY are popular cruise ports on the Eastern Seaboard. For those looking to travel a little further from home, many east coast cruises offer itineraries to international destinations such as Canada, Bermuda, or the Caribbean Islands.

New England
New England has ports in Newport, Rhode Island; Boston, Massachusetts; Portland, Maine; and Maine’s Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park. However, be aware that the number of cruises available in these areas drops significantly in the colder months.
New York Harbor
The New York area offers a few options, with cruises sailing out of both Manhattan and Brooklyn. Cruises also sail from Bayonne, New Jersey. (Cape Liberty).
Mid-Atlantic & South Atlantic
Moving further south, there are ports in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Baltimore, Maryland; Norfolk, Virginia; and Charleston, South Carolina. There are also ports in Annapolis, Maryland; Alexandria, Virginia; and Yorktown, Virginia. With these, however, you’d typically be looking at itineraries with smaller ships, as most of these ports are “inland” which would be almost like a river cruise along the coast.
Florida is commonly associated with cruise departure ports, and rightfully so as the ports in Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale, Cape Port Canaveral, and Miami are among the busiest in the United States. Most itineraries from Florida travel directly down to the Caribbean or to the Bahamas.
When is the Best Time to Cruise the East Coast?
The beauty of cruising the Eastern Seaboard is that every season makes for a great time to cruise – depending on the region. While early fall can often be rough with hurricanes in the southern half of the coast, the North is picturesque with fall foliage. And while the North can be bitterly cold between December and March, the South can warm travelers with much more comfortable temperatures.
Finding the right time to cruise your favorite itinerary is imperative to having a successful vacation. While you can plan for the best, always keep in mind that you cannot control the weather. Severe weather happening in one area of the country can have an impact on more than just the immediate area. For instance, a hurricane that strikes the Carolinas can cause rough water in New England. Plan for unforeseen weather patterns and you’ll be less surprised if something should alter your course.
You may have heard the phrase “wave season.” Wave season refers to the time of the year when the cruise industry offers discounted rates, usually from mid-January through mid-March. These deals make it the most popular time for east coast cruisers to book their trips. The types of offers and discounts will vary by destination and cruise line.
Best Things to See While Cruising the Eastern Seaboard
For the majority of the year the New England Coastline is an absolute show stopper. It offers a comfortable climate and drips with picturesque charm. From the coastline of Maine to the cozy Boston Harbor, travelers will be delighted with all New England has to offer. Delicious seafood, charming little port towns and a gorgeous shoreline that matches no other. If you are really looking for a treat, take a New England cruise during the fall months. The shoreline dazzles travelers with the brilliance of fall foliage. But keep in mind the New England cruising season is from April – October as the area often experiences harsh winters.
The Chesapeake Bay area (the mid-Atlantic states) is rich with beauty and history. Trade, industry, and military have always been an important part of this historic area. From the cobblestone streets to the colonial architecture, travelers are immersed in the country’s rich history in these small ports and towns dating back to the 1600s.
The Southern region of the United States offers just as much history as the Chesapeake Bay area with a little bit more Southern charm. If you ever wondered what the “Old South” truly was, cruise this region to immerse yourself in southern traditions. Along the way, you’ll see southern plantations, Colonial architecture and famous battle sights of the Civil War.
Atlantic coast cruises offer a wide variety of locations and experiences, so be sure to check your itinerary and do your research to identify your must-dos before heading into your east coast cruise. The culture of the ports along the banks of the Mississippi is as diverse as the scenery. For travelers who are looking for a luxury river cruise experience without the time or investment in a transcontinental flight, a sail down the Mississippi River may be a great option.
Which Cruise Lines Sail the Mississippi?
There are two main Mississippi River cruise lines throughout the year: American Cruise Lines and American Queen Steamboat Company. Both have excellent itineraries and perks that they include in their cruises.
American Cruise Lines has the newest and most environmentally friendly small cruise ships and riverboats in North America. They also have an open bar cocktail hour every night prior to dinner. A few cruise itineraries include free shore excursions for travelers. If you are trying to keep your budget tight, you’ll want to look for those options. Also, American Cruise Lines offers discounts to travelers who book early.
American Queen Steamboat Company has several great options as well. Every itinerary available through them has free shore excursions in each port. This is a great way to keep costs down while you are traveling. Also, they offer a night at a hotel free prior to the cruise launching. So, you won’t have to try and cut costs and can prepare adequately for any travel delays that may occur on the way. They also offer money saving options for travelers who book early and/or in full.
While these are both amazing options for any river cruiser, another option is on the way! Viking River Cruises has announced they are working on a Mississippi River cruise but have not released dates or details.
Regions of the River Available to Cruise
The Mississippi River has three major regions that are available for itineraries from cruise lines. Depending on the time of year, one region may be better to cruise than another.
Lower Mississippi River Cruises:
Itineraries that sail the lower Mississippi River will typically travel from New Orleans to Memphis. You may be able to find a round trip cruise, although those itineraries are longer and rare. Usually, these itineraries last five to seven days and will travel either way (up or down the river). There are several port options that include southern sites like old plantations and vibrant cities. The cruising season for this region is November and December and then April through mid-June. It has the longest season of any of the regions, but American Cruise Lines offers itineraries all year long.
Middle Mississippi River Cruises:
Cruises that travel the middle of the river are typically five to seven days sailing between Memphis and St. Louis. This region is more scenic than the lower region but typically has fewer ports. If you are interested in spending more time on the ship, these itineraries may be for you. They will generally have more cruising days than any other itinerary.
Upper Mississippi River Cruises:
Traveling between St. Louis and St. Paul, these cruises typically last five to seven days. Round trip options are available as well. The itineraries in the Upper Mississippi are the most scenic and often the most popular. However, the cruising season for the upper part of the river is short and sometimes volatile. The water is sometimes too high to cruise in the spring and early summer for riverboats to sail. However, on American Cruise Lines you can sail at any time in the year.
Which Ports are Most Popular for Mississippi River Cruises?
Vicksburg, MS
This port would be perfect for the big history buff. It’s the site of a famous Siege of Vicksburg in the Civil War. It’s also the home to several plantations and train depots. Popular attractions include the National Military Park and the Old Depot Museum.
Baton Rouge, LA
This city is rich in culture and dripping with delicious food. The cuisine is something you want to miss as it’s a unique mix of Creole and Cajun. Popular attractions include the LSU Rural Life Museum and Louisiana Old state capitol.
Memphis, TN
Of course, this is the home of rock and roll and Elvis. There is more to the town than Graceland, although you could fill a day with just reminiscing in Rock ‘n Roll. Popular attractions include the National Civil Rights Museum and Shelby Farms.
Hannibal, MS
This is the port for any book lovers and literary scholars. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn is focused around this town. You could spend the day reliving the story you knew as a kid and learning more than you once did! Popular attractions include the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum, the Huckleberry Finn house and the Becky Thatcher House.
Travel Tips for Cruising the Mississippi River
1. Be Prepared for Wet Weather During the Summer
The humidity throughout the river banks is very high, especially in the summer months. This often brings on sudden thunderstorms. If you like to frequent the viewing deck on cruise ships, you may want to be prepared with an umbrella, a raincoat, or to get inside quickly if the weather turns!
2. Bring Bug Spray
Just like rain, with humidity comes bugs. Whether you are on the ship or on a shore excursion, you’ll most likely need it to keep the bugs at bay.
3. Listen for the River Expert on the Loudspeaker
When you are on the viewing deck, keep an ear out for the river expert on the public address system. Often times they will chime in throughout the cruising time to tell travelers what sites are on the river banks. It could really add to the experience of your trip.
4. Weather May Affect the River Cruise Itinerary
Bad weather on the rivers can alter itineraries. A riverboat may reroute if a significant drought makes water levels so low that riverboats caannot sail upstream. Similarly, too much rain can flood the river, making it impossible to travel under bridges. Cruise lines do plan for this and often have backup plans in place to keep the experience interact. Our best advice is to be flexible with your ports or invest in cruise insurance to ensure you see the sights important to you.
Do I Need Insurance for a Mississippi River Cruise?
While cruise insurance is not required for Mississippi River cruises, travelers should consider buying coverage. Even on river cruises, passengers can experience delays, become ill, miss connections, or lose personal items. To protect you and your family from these unexpected events, think about purchasing cruise insurance.

Key Findings
No surprise here-research confirms Paris, France as the most romantic destination. For years now Paris has been known as “The City of Love,” and our research affirms this. Paris saw the highest amount of proposals and is home to the most romantic landmarks. However, Paris did not rate the highest for quality of wine bars, as this accolade goes to Charleston in the United States.
Charleston is the most romantic US destination and something of a hidden gem. The city may lack famous landmarks but the well-preserved architecture, distinguishable wine bars and quality of green spaces make it an ideal setting for couples.
Other interesting findings include: London is the second most romantic city, Santorini in Greece is the most popular for honeymoons (according to Instagram) and Ubud in Bali is the most romantic outside of Europe. If you are looking for a more budget-friendly option, Jaipur in India offers an affordable romantic destination after travel fees. Lisbon in Portugal is the most LGBTQ friendly destination.
Methodology
Each data point consists of the latest research available from reputable sources. The sources include eight destination specific data points and one country level data point. The data was standardized using minmax normalization. The minmax normalization value is multiplied by 10 to create a score (between 0-10). A score of 10 is always the best result, while a score of 0 is the worst. Each destination is then ranked on their overall rating across all romantic data points, to find which destination is the most romantic.
InsureMyTrip isolated each data point in addition to giving an overall category score. This will give couples an opportunity to target destinations for individual points (e.g. quality of wine bars, green space or price). Alternatively, the “Overall” category score gives a general view of which destinations will make you and your better half swoon.

What is Wave Season?
If you’ve been planning a cruise vacation, you may have heard the phrase “wave season.” Wave season refers to the time of the year when the cruise industry offers discounted rates. These deals make it the most popular time for cruisers to book their trips.
When is Wave Season?
While the dates are not exact, wave season typically runs from mid-January to mid-March each year. The types of offers and discounts will vary by destination and cruise line, but the majority of cruises are booked during this promotional period.
How Can Cruisers Get the Best Deals During Wave Season?
Now that you know what wave season is and when it occurs, you can leverage the promotional period to get the best deal on your cruise vacation. For example, if you’re considering booking a cruise for the coming year as a holiday gift, it may be better to wait a few weeks before booking until the wave season promotions begin to run.
Book an Off-Peak Cruise
If your departure dates are flexible, you may be able to save even more money by traveling during off-peak times. Off-peak season cruises are typically cheaper due to lower demand, so combining off-peak deals with wave season deals is a great way to spend less and get more. Research your cruise destination to find out when the peak seasons are.
Travel Agents & Package Deals
If you plan on booking your cruise through a travel agent, you may be able to combine deals for additional savings. Some travel agents have partnerships with specific cruise lines and in some cases can offer further incentives, like free upgrades, package deals, and specialty options.
Loyalty Programs
If you’re a frequent cruiser, consider becoming a loyalty member with your favorite cruise line for even more savings. Your membership may entitle you to exclusive offers or first dibs at special promotions. The savviest cruisers combine loyalty savings and exclusive offers with wave season deals for maximum discounts.
Discounts for Seniors
Senior citizens may qualify for additional discounts either directly through the cruise line or indirectly through a membership program. For example, AARP frequently runs deals that allow older travelers to save even more on their nautical vacations.
Depart from a Local Port
While not everyone lives close to a cruise port of call, those who do can save by choosing a local departure option. Doing so allows travelers to avoid having to book expensive flights or pay for long-term parking.
Research & Plan Ahead
Planning ahead gives cruisers the best chance at booking a high-quality cruise at the lowest possible price. Start with a budget and research your desired cruise line and destinations. Then watch for promotions during wave season to find an option that suits your needs and budget. Most importantly, be prepared to act fast and book at a moment’s notice. Some cruise deals only run for a limited time, so you’ll want to make sure you can book before it’s too late.
Purchase Travel Insurance When You Book
Once you have booked your perfect cruise at a great price, don’t forget to purchase cruise travel insurance. Cruises can be complex vacations with multiple legs, international destinations, and many costs paid up front. Unexpected illness or injury are top concerns of travelers. Many cruisers don’t know that their domestic medical insurance provider may not cover care they receive outside of their home country. Medical travel insurance coverage can offset these expenses. Depending on the plan, cruise travel insurance can also protect you for various other reasons including missed connections, lost baggage, cancellation due to severe weather, or an emergency evacuation from the sea. It is advisable to research your insurance options and purchase a policy through a third-party source that fits your specific travel needs.
