Nationwide Mutual Insurance Essential
As I didn't need to use the insurance while on my vacation in Moscow, there's not much I can say about the effectiveness of the coverage, but I was definitely at ease knowing that if I had needed to use it, I could have contacted Nationwide and had my needs taken care of! I shopped around, and for the coverage I got, this was the best price I found! I plan to use this company the next time I go abroad!

Didn’t have to use the insurance this time but i have used it in the past and it was great. It is nice not to have to worry if something does happen.

I use Insure my trip for every cruise we schedule. I like the option of being able to compare medical coverages for the amount of coverage, exclusions, pre-existing clause coverage, etc. The remainder of coverages appear to be similar across other insurance policies. . But to be able to compare medicall coverage, emergency evacuation, etc ar of utmost importance in purchasing a travel plan.

I would recommend Insure my trip to anyone. The prices beat those the cruise ships offer by far - and with increased coverage.

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Choice Cruise
In the past, I had always used the same travel insurance to cover our cruises and, fortunately, never had to file a claim. The insurance seemed pretty generic and so I began a search for cruise specific policies. In my research, I came across Nationwide’s Choice Cruise Plan. The Choice Cruise Plan was a little bit more expensive than the policy I had been using, but the coverage was so much better that I thought the added expense was justified. As it turns out, I was right!

My husband and I cruised in December after hurricanes Irma and Maria caused widespread destruction in the Caribbean. One of our original ports of call was St. Maarten, but due to the devastation suffered on the island, Carnival changed our cruise itinerary from St. Maarten to Amber Cove (Puerto Plata), Dominican Republic. After review of our policy, I called Nationwide to confirm itinerary change coverage. The claims department confirmed coverage and gave me specific instructions (over the phone and in a follow-up email) on what was needed to file a claim. I filed our claim on December 18, 2017, and had a check in hand on January 2, 2018. Nationwide Choice Cruise Plan will be the only travel insurance I use for future cruises, and it will always be the cruise insurance I recommend to family and friends.

It appeared to be a good plan that covered the basic needs of our trip. It is unknown how good the cover would be when making a claim!

We were unable to go on the trip b/c the owner of the place we were staying (Airbnb) said the electricity and water were still not quite 100% (we were supposed to have gone to Puerto Rico).
The agent I spoke with told me the owner would have to state that the Airbnb was “uninhabitable” for us to start a claim. Well, I was not going to ask her to lie - her apartment is not “uninhabitable” by definition - but not having the comfort of knowing for certain that we would have power and water 100% of the time coupled with knowing that a lot of areas in PR are still not really for tourists — we decided it would be best not to go at this time.
The insurance wasn’t going to cover it. We ended up losing $200 to one Airbnb (we had 2 units to cover the whole time span), $400 to the airline and the $158 for the insurance.

Thank you for providing feedback on this policy.

We are sorry to hear that you were unable to take your trip. The Nationwide Essential policy has a strict set of covered reason that the insurance company would cover in the event of a cancellation or interruption of your trip. They state:

"(e) Natural Disaster or documented man-made disaster at the point of departure or Your destination which renders Your primary residence or the accommodations at Your destination uninhabitable."

This terminology is the standard amongst most of our policies and the only way to cover a situation where your accommodations are in fact habitable would be with a Cancel For Any Reason benefit, which was not included on your plan.

Here are the requirements for this benefit, if you feel like this is something you would like to include on your next policy. There are 3 conditions that must be met to purchase a Cancel For Any Reason Rider as follows: Purchase the policy within 10 - 21 days of First Trip Payment; Insure ALL prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses prior to departure; Trip arrangements must be canceled more than 48 -72 hours prior to the departure date. If you meet all 3 of these conditions, most of the policies will reimburse you 75% of your trip costs, unless otherwise noted.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions or concerns. Our licensed representatives are available 7 days a week and can be reached at 1-800-487-4722.
