Question:

With cancel for any reason, is it truly any reason? Like I just changed my mind...
- NinaS,

Answer:

Yes, you can cancel the trip for any reason with that benefit, as long as you qualify. There are typically 3 conditions that must be met to purchase a Cancel For Any Reason Rider: Purchase the policy within 10 - 21 days of First Trip Payment; Insure ALL prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses prior to departure; Trip arrangements must be canceled more than 48 -72 hours prior to the departure date. If you meet all 3 of these conditions, this benefit will typically reimburse you 75% of your trip cost, unless otherwise noted.

Question:

Can I cancel and have full refund if a family member dies?
- JenniferS,
08/27/2022

Answer:

The number one covered reason for Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption is the unforeseen illness or injury of you or a traveling companion that deems you unfit to travel, by order of a licensed physician; or the unforeseen hospitalization or death of a family member. This includes non-traveling family members as well. Trip Cancellation reimburses 100%.

Question:

I am paying for a trip to Africa for a friend and I. She is not a US citizen and will be covered for medical only. If I buy cancellation for the trip and she gets sick and can't go, thus i can't go, do I get reimbursed for the whole trip (that I paid for) or just half?
- ChristieN,
08/25/2022

Answer:

You would only be able to insure your portion of the total trip cost on your policy in the even of a Trip Cancellation, please keep in mind. Even though you are paying for the entire trip, you can only insure your portion of the total trip cost and your friend would need to insure their portion of the total trip cost on a policy from a provider who insures non U.S residents. Thank you.

Question:

I need to understand reimbursement for death of a family member not included in the travel group or non-travel member. If there is a death before the trip then cancellation but must be within 48 hours of departure. What if there is a death of a non-travel family member and the trip is cut short? The accommodations I’m trying to book are non-refundable. Would trip cancellation policy cover cancellation for a death of non-travel member before and/or during the trip?
- TerriC,

Answer:

The number one covered reason for Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption is the unforeseen illness or injury of you or a traveling companion that deems you unfit to travel, by order of a licensed physician; or the unforeseen hospitalization or death of a family member. This applies to non-traveling family members as well. If it is pre-departure, this would be considered Trip Cancellation. If it was post departure, meaning you are on the trip, this would be considered Trip Interruption. Trip Cancellation applies up until the day of departure, please keep in mind.

Question:

Are there any insurance policies that cover covid if you have paid deposit on trip more than a month ago?
- Joan,
08/26/2021

Answer:

You can purchase most policies up until the day before departure, however; you may not be eligible for some time sensitive benefits if you do not purchase within 10-21 days of the initial trip deposit/payment. Some time sensitive benefits are, but not limited to: Pre-Existing Condition Waiver, Financial Default, Terrorism, Cancel For Any Reason and Cancel For Work Reasons. As long as the policy certificate does not have an exclusion for Pandemics/Epidemics and there are no click-through agreements on the buy page asking you to agree that you will not be covered for Covid, you can be covered as if you were diagnosed with any other unforeseen illness causing a cancellation or interruption of the trip, or if you were required to seek medical attention during the trip. A physician must advise cancellation of the covered trip on or before the scheduled departure date or interruption of the covered trip on or before the scheduled return date. Please keep in mind that reasons such as fear of traveling, government travel restrictions, or if you know you have to take and pass a Covid test in order to travel to your destination will not be covered with Trip Cancellation. These reasons would require the additional “Cancel For Any Reason” benefit in order to be covered.

Question:

Can i buy a policy that covers ONLY trip cancellation - either trip cancellation of cancel for any reason?
- RobertV,
10/25/2020

Answer:

Unfortunately, we do not have any policies that offers just cancellation coverage by itself. This is included with a comprehensive policy. Comprehensive Plans are the most widely known form of coverage and are often called package plans. Typically, a Comprehensive Plan will offer a variety of benefits for travelers, covering a wide range of concerns. Most provide coverage for Trip Cancellation, Trip interruption, Baggage loss, Medical, Dental, Emergency Evacuation, 24 Hour Traveler Assistance, Baggage Delay, Travel Delay, and Accidental Death. Question:

What type of policy covers the expenses of a beach house rental cancellation? We would only need that cost covered, no airfare or medical or baggage claim.
- MeganB,
06/06/2020

Answer:

Trip cancellation coverage is available as part of a comprehensive plan, which includes other benefits such as emergency medical, baggage and trip delay. We do not offer any trip cancellation only plans currently. Comprehensive plans will offer trip cancellation coverage allowing reimbursement of your prepaid, non-refundable trip cost if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason listed in the policy certificate. If you are concerned you may have to cancel your trip for something other than a covered reason, such as fear of travel related to COVID-19 or state closures, you would want to look at a comprehensive plan that offers optional Cancel for Any Reason protection. There are some eligibility requirements for Cancel For Any Reason protection, such as insuring 100% of pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs, purchasing your coverage within 10-21 days after making your initial trip payment/deposit, and you must cancel your trip no less than 2 days prior to departure. Cancel For Any Reason can reimburse a portion, typically up to 50%-75%, of your trip cost depending on the plan purchased. A policy with Cancel For Any Reason selected can cost an additional 40%-60% more than a standard policy, is not available in all states, and eligibility requirements may differ by company. If you would like assistance finding a plan that best fits your needs, you can call our Customer Care department at 800-487-4722 to speak with a licensed travel insurance representative.

We are planning to go to Denver in 3 weeks. We purchased tickets last night through United and they are offering no change/cancellation fees and the tickets can be used up to 12 months from date of issue. Is it worth purchasing travel insurance in this case? Or is it redundant coverage?

The U.S. State Department has prohibited entry to the U.S. from Europe for 30 days effective Friday 13MARCH2020. I will be in Europe with a return date during this time. If I can’t return is this covered in any manner?
- Bill,
03/12/2020

Answer:

It is important to know the details of any directive that has been set forth by the government, and to also review the covered reasons for trip cancellation and interruption on any plans that you are reviewing or have purchased. Since Coronavirus is now a known event, standard travel insurance policies are not going to offer coverage for related flight cancellations or travel warnings. It is best to check with your travel suppliers to see if they are offering options to cancel or reschedule your travel arrangements without additional fees or penalties.

Question:

What if I have a death on the family, for example, but then our flight is also canceled due to flights being suspended due to corona virus? Would insurance apply because of my circumstances or be excluded because of corona virus?
- Alissa,
03/11/2020

Answer:

We do understand your concern as news of Coronavirus develops daily. It is recommended that you contact your travel agent and/or travel suppliers to see if they are offering the ability to cancel and receive a refund or rebook travel to a later date. Generally, travel insurance does not cover trip cancellation due fear of travel. Also, since events related to Coronavirus are now foreseen, coverage may not be available to cancel your trip on a standard Comprehensive plan. The only way to have any coverage to cancel your trip, would be to purchase a comprehensive plan with optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage selected. There are some eligibility requirements for this coverage, such as insuring 100% of pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs, purchasing your coverage within 10-21 days of your initial trip payment, and you must cancel your trip no less than 2 days prior to departure. Cancel For Any Reason can reimburse a portion, typically up to 50%-75%, of your trip cost depending on the plan purchased. A policy with Cancel For Any Reason can cost an additional 40%-60% more than a standard policy, is not available in all states, and eligibility requirements may differ by company. Standard Comprehensive plans do generally cover the unforeseen illness, injury or death of a listed traveler, traveling companion or family member. One thing to keep in mind is that the person (traveling or non-traveling) must be in good health at the time that the plan was purchased and may be subject to a pre-existing condition lookback period. If they are not in good health or there are concerns related to pre-existing conditions, a policy with Cancel For Any Reason selected would be the only option to receive reimbursement of a portion of your trip cost in the event you need to cancel your trip for this reason.

We're planning a trip to Europe with 2 other couples. The trip will be cancelled if any of the couple backs out most likely due to health reason. Will our trip cancellation cover us?
- Pat,

Answer:

If one traveler has to cancel for a covered reason, all travelers who are insured are also covered to cancel as well. The number one covered reason for Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption is the unforeseen illness or injury of you or a traveling companion that deems you unfit to travel, by order of a licensed physician; or the unforeseen hospitalization or death of a family member. I have an insured who is going on a cruise but has a friend with a parent who is not well. His concern is if he has to cancel the cruise for the funeral. If I am reading it right even with CAFR it has to be a death of an immediate family member. Is this correct or is it for anyone?

Only Trip Cancellation, which is separate from Cancel for Any Reason, have these restrictions. With "Cancel for Any Reason" you can literally cancel for any reason whatsoever as long as you qualify. There are 3 conditions that must be met to purchase a Cancel For Any Reason Rider as follows: Purchase the policy within 10 - 21 days of First Trip Payment; Insure ALL prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses prior to departure; Trip arrangements must be canceled more than 48 -72 hours prior to the departure date. Question:

Hi, have heard that tour operators cancel trips . We have booked a tour and flight component with the same company, hence the flights were scheduled to suit the tour. Should the tour operator cancel the tour due to lack of numbers and therefore it doesn't go ahead are covered by insurance. My understanding is they may try to reschedule us on to another tour and therefore dates would change, flight dates would change and therefore the cost of flights paid for in full last year will increase a lot. We are yet to purchase insurance but would like to know how to avoid having to pay extra money as we have spend all our savings for this trip and would not be able to find extra $$ should this happen.

Question:

My girlfriend and I are traveling to Asia in June; I am 100% going but my girl-friend could possibly cancel due to work (work reason is not covered under normal Trip-cancellation terms). I only need trip-cancellation coverage, whereas my girlfriend would need CFAR coverage. One of the conditions for CFAR coverage eligibility is that I must "Insure ALL prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses prior to departure." If I am paying for both airline tickets at once, does this clause mean that I must insure the total costs of flights (for my gf and myself)? or is it simply referring to the total airline costs for the policy holder with the CFAR option (my gf). Is it possible to get two separate plans and insured the costs of our individual flights? (even if its all been paid together)? In addition, say my gf cancels and invokes the coverage, does my gf (policy holder) need to fill out the claim or does the person who paid (me) for the policy do that?
- Terence,
03/15/2017

Answer:

The best way to insure this type of trip is buying two separate policies. Most plans do offer a benefit called Cancel for Work Reasons, which is separate from Cancel for Any Reason. If you have the time off already approved and you are concerned that your employer revokes the previously approved time off, that is what this benefit is designed for. If your concern is not being able to get off of work in time for the trip, that is when you will need Cancel for Any Reason. Each traveler would insure 100% of their portion of their trip cost on their policy in order to qualify for that benefit.

I'm not sure if this question was answer directly. If my father (actually in my case), grandfather, passes away during my trip and I have to cut my trip short and fly home, will trip interruption reimburse me for the remainder of my trip. Are there restrictions on types of family members, does it need to be immediate (parents, siblings only), or can it be more removed, grand parents, aunt/uncle, etc.
- Diana,

Trip Interruption due to an unforeseen illness or injury of non-traveling family member who requires your care would provide reimbursement of the unused, pre-paid and nonrefundable travel arrangements and the cost of airline change fees to return home up to the maximum Trip Interruption limit. Please be sure to check the plan exclusions, and gain an understanding of how the policy views pre-existing medical conditions. Each plan provides a definition of family member. The definition of family member typically includes: spouse, parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

If you meet all 3 of these conditions, most of the policies will reimburse you 75% of your trip costs, unless otherwise noted. The Cancel For Any Reason will show under its own box. Please make sure to click on the underlined phrase to view the requirements to qualify for this option. If you decide to buy this Rider, make sure to click on the box near the Cancel For Any Reason Rider and hit the 'buy' button at the top or bottom of the quote. Please note that these policies are State-specific.

Question:

We are traveling with friends and they are booking our flights using their credit card. We are reimbursing them. Can we still get travel insurance?
- CG,

Answer:

Yes, you insure items based on who is listed on the reservation, not necessarily who pays for it.

I am going on a mission trip and the cost is variable depending on supplies needed. If I can not go they will refund my money except for airfare so do I only use airfare as my cost of trip to insure?

Question:

We will be using frequent flier miles to "pay" for our airfare. If we need to cancel the flights, we will not incur any penalties due to my frequent flier status. Do we need to include this for a policy that includes "cancel for any reason?"
- ElizabethL,
03/05/2014

Answer:

You would only need to include any out-of-pocket taxes or fees paid when the tickets were booked. You would also want to include any fee the airline would charge to redeposit your miles back if you canceled the trip.

Question:

How far in advance must I get travel insurance?
- LINDA,
02/11/2014

Answer:

As soon as you make the first deposit/booking/payment towards the trip you become eligible to buy insurance. We recommend purchasing it within the first 10-21 days after making this payment (especially if you need coverage for cancel for any reason or pre-existing conditions), but you can technically buy coverage up until the day before departure.

Question:

I am planning on a month long trip with a tour company. It will take me to 3 countries. There is the main trip with a pre and post trip country. When looking at policies, they don't seem to make allowances for the pre and post trip countries. Do I purchase based on the country I will spend the most time in, the main trip country? If so, will my time in the other countries be covered?
- Judith,
01/25/2014

Answer:

The length of a "trip" is considered from the day you leave your home until the day you return home and you would insure all prepaid, non-refundable travel arrangements that are made prior to departure. The destination is whichever country you will be spending the most time in during your trip. If you'll be visiting several destinations equally (or spending most of it on a cruise ship) then list the country where your trip begins. You will still be covered while traveling outside of the selected country, so long as you are not visiting a destination that is considered restricted. If a policy does consider certain destinations restricted, you can find this list in the terms and conditions section.

Question:

I will not purchase airline tickets until months after purchasing trip insurance. can we just insure the non-refundable costs of hotels? We might have non-refundable fees for re-scheduling the air faire and want to insure that we are not disqualified from canceling for any reason.
- CHARLESR,
12/22/2013

Answer:

Since you do not know the cost of your airfare, you can insure what you have for non refundable expenses thus far, to get the policy in place during the time requirement for Cancel For Any Reason. Once you book additional arrangements, you can then call us back within 10/14/21/30 days (policy specific) of booking that arrangement to add it to your policy, pay any additional premium due, and keep your Cancel For any Reason Rider. When you are requesting the optional Cancel For Any Reason Rider you must insure ALL pre paid non refundable expenses. Unless you would receive the full value of the air travel ticket back in cash, the ticket is non refundable. Some airlines offer you the ability to pay a fee and reuse the ticket within a year, this does not equate to being a refundable ticket, because at no point can you get your actual money back. In these types of situations, you would need to insure the full cost of the ticket to be Cancel For Any Reason compliant. When it comes to regular trip cancellation (specific covered reasons), provided you are not insuring for pre-existing medical conditions coverage, on most plans you would be able to insure the "re-issue" fee charged by the airline to re use your ticket if you so choose. Please keep in mind if you choose to do this, and then are unable to use the ticket within the allotted time frame set forth by the airline, you cannot go back and change your claim to the full cost of the ticket.

Question:

I purchased non refundable airline tickets for a family trip in August. We don't have to pay for the hotel until we arrive. We just learned that my granddaughter has to be home the week we were going to be away for high school orientation and team tryouts so we want to move our trip up a week. Would cancellation insurance cover that?
- Howard,
11/30/2013

Answer:

Unfortunately, insurance is for unforeseen events. Since you are already aware that you need to make changes to your trip, insurance will not cover this. Also, in the future, the Trip Cancellation benefit is if you need to cancel your trip completely due to a covered reason, and not to reschedule the trip.
