Question:

I have a trip to Italy planned in February. Are there any policies that cover fully Italy closing its boarders to US citizens?
- Anna BlairB,
12/16/2021

Answer:

You would need a policy that has "cancel for any reason" for this concern. There are typically 3 conditions that must be met to purchase a Cancel For Any Reason Rider: Purchase the policy within 10 - 21 days of First Trip Payment; Insure ALL prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses prior to departure; Trip arrangements must be canceled more than 48 -72 hours prior to the departure date. If you meet all 3 of these conditions, this benefit will typically reimburse you 75% of your trip cost, unless otherwise noted.

With "Cancel for any reason", you can literally cancel for any reason whatsoever as long as you qualify. For this particular concern and most concerns surrounding Covid-19, we do suggest this benefit in case you wanted to cancel the trip. Question:

We are traveling to Hawaii as a family of 7. If one or more of us receives a positive COVID test can we cancel our trip and get refunded? If it it is less than 24 hours before departing? Sometimes tests don’t come back until 24 hours or less.
- Holley,

Answer:

That is not a covered reason with Trip Cancellation, unfortunately. This would require "Cancel for Any Reason". This is the only benefit that would cover this particular concern.

Question:

I booked a cabin rental in Yosemite through VRBO. The house has a no-refund policy, and VRBO can't force the owner/manager to refund. I'm not concerned with personal issues (i.g., getting sick, losing job, travel problems, scared to travel). I am concerned with the factors outside of my control. If there is a forest fire that shuts down the area preventing access to the house, is my trip covered? If the county bans short-term rentals because of Covid-19, is my trip covered?
- DillonF,
10/24/2020

Answer:

For these concerns that are considered foreseen, you would want a policy that includes "cancel for any reason". This coverage allows you to cancel the trip for any reason whatsoever, as long as you qualify. Question:

Can a travel policy be moved to a later date if a trip is rescheduled?
- SharonM,
04/25/2020

Answer:

Some companies are allowing policies to be transferred to a future trip. It is best to call our Customer Care department at 800-487-4722 and speak with one of our licensed travel insurance representatives regarding the policy you purchased through InsureMyTrip.com. There will be certain documentation that you may need to provide, such as (but not limited to), documentation showing your old trip has been cancelled or transferred to new dates without any penalties and a statement that you will not be filing a claim against the policy for the original trip. The travel insurance company that is providing your coverage (not InsureMyTrip) will make all final decisions as to whether a your policy can be transferred to a future trip.

Question:

I have a trip to Munich planned in the fall for October fest. IF octoberfest itself is cancelled, removing the reason for the trip, would the trip be covered? I have passed the eligibility to buy cancel for any reason coverage.
- MarkB,
04/14/2020

Answer:

Although comprehensive travel insurance plans do offer trip cancellation coverage for many reasons that travelers may need to cancel their trips, this would not be a covered reason for cancellation and full reimbursement. Unfortunately, in this case, a policy with Cancel For Any Reason coverage would likely be your only option to get most of your prepaid, non-refundable trip cost back if the event is cancelled and you don't want to travel.

Question:

I’m interested in booking a trip for this summer for Europe but want a insurance that will cover the trip if would have to cancel if the Coronavirus is present. does the cancel for any reason insurance cover this?
- RhondaM,
03/27/2020

Answer:

Yes, if cancellation due to a Coronavirus related issue is your main concern, you would want to purchase a comprehensive plan with optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage selected. There are some eligibility requirements for this coverage, such as insuring 100% of pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs, purchasing your coverage within 10-21 days after making your initial trip payment, and you must cancel your trip no less than 2 days prior to departure. Cancel For Any Reason can reimburse a portion, typically up to 50%-75%, of your trip cost depending on the plan purchased. A policy with Cancel For Any Reason can cost an additional 40%-60% more than a standard policy, is not available in all states, and eligibility requirements may differ by company.

Question:

If the country you're traveling to is closed by quarantine, will insurance cover this if airline tix were purchased prior to the corona virus outbreak?
- William,
03/22/2020

Answer:

It may be a good idea to contact your travel supplier first to see if they are offering refunds, or waiving fees for transfers to new travel dates, as many are working with customers during this time. Typically, a country restricting travel due to border closings is not covered by a comprehensive travel insurance plan under Trip Cancellation. In this case, if you have purchased a plan that offers Cancel For Any Reason and all eligibility requirements are met (such as insuring 100% of pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs, purchasing your coverage within 10-21 days of your initial trip payment, and you are cancelling your trip no less than 2 days prior to departure), you may be able to recoup a percentage (typically 50%-75% depending on the plan) of your pre-paid, non-refundable trip cost.

- Bruce,

Question:

If I bought travel insurance after 1/21/20 and the country I am traveling to issues a ban on travelers coming from the United States, due to the spread of the virus here, am I covered under Trip Cancellation benefits, as it is not a voluntary cancellation?
- Jay,
03/09/2020

Answer:

It is recommended that you contact your travel agent and/or travel suppliers to see if they are offering the ability to cancel and receive a refund or rebook travel to a later date. Generally, travel insurance does not cover trip cancellation due fear of travel. Also, since travel warnings are now foreseen, coverage would not be available to cancel your trip due to your destination being inaccessible because of Coronavirus. The only way to have any coverage to cancel your trip, would be to purchase a comprehensive plan with optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage selected. There are some eligibility requirements for this coverage, such as insuring 100% of pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs, purchasing your coverage within 10-21 days of your initial trip payment, and you must cancel your trip no less than 2 days prior to departure. Question:

We purchased insurance for an upcoming cruise (April 2020). The cancellation reasons include coverage if the CDC issues a travel advisory for any of the countries we plan to visit on our trip (effective during the dates of our trip). Countries we plan to visit are all in Northern Europe, and no such advisory has been issued. HOWEVER, CDC just issued a blanked advisory against travelling on cruise ships. Does that count?
- DonnaL,
03/09/2020

Answer:

A CDC warning would need to be issued to a destination country listed on your itinerary for coverage to apply. Although some plans do offer coverage for CDC warnings (issued to avoid travel to your destination during the time that you plan to travel), companies now consider the Coronavirus and related CDC warnings to be known events. Once an event is known, or no longer unforeseen, the company will no longer offer coverage, including trip cancellation or interruption, for that reason. The dates that Coronavirus became a known event differ by company, but usually fall in the range of 1/20/20 – 1/30/20, meaning plans purchased after those dates may not have coverage for CDC warnings to destination countries worldwide.
