My trip was cancelled due to COVID-19 and I lost money on some VRBO places. This company took 3 months to work my claim before denying it. They said COVID-19 wasn't a natural disaster. Worst company ever. Won't ever do business with this insurance company again. Avoid this company. I will file a complaint with the California Department of Insurance.

Agents suggest you take out the policy several months in advance. Cruise and flight cancelled, but rebooked at a cheaper cost. Insure my trip Nationwide refused any refund saying I only had 10 days to cancel or change Poilicy. Cruise line and air carrier gave refunds for price difference, not Nationwide! They took advantage of the situation! Will NEVER use Insure my Trip Nationwide again!

    Thank you for your feedback.

We are sorry to learn that your trip was postponed. Fortunately, Nationwide Mutual Insurance was able to transfer your policy to the new travel dates at no additional cost. You are correct in that most comprehensive travel insurance policies have a review period, typically 10-15 days from the date you purchase the plan, depending on the state you live in. The Nationwide Essential plan in your state of residence has a 10 day review period in which insureds are able to cancel the policy or make any changes that would result in a premium refund. There are no refunds outside of the review period. For information about how travel insurance can accommodate a rescheduled or cancelled trip, please call us at 800-487-4722.

My dissatisfaction with the claim and policy is complexity of the contract, written with an abundance of language that allowed my claim to be denied, all within reason, given the contract (20 pages). First reason given, no notice within 20 days of loss. I filed on grounds of employer canceling my vacation given the need for me to remain on duty (I'm a surgeon). The company stated that my loss occurred when the vacation was canceled. I filed 15 days after the date of return, assuming the loss occurred when trip would have been concluded; when all the arrangements were beyond salvage and when I had a chance to request all the refunds from airlines, etc. Second reason, some of the travel providers issued vouchers rather than refunds. There exists no way to use those as the trip was overseas, but the company considers vouchers to be refunds. Some of the vouchers expire before we will be allowed into those countries. The policy states "unused non-refundable Prepaid Payments or Deposits" will be reimbursed. I maintain that an unusable voucher is not a refund, since the definition of re-fund is to return my funds to me, not a promise for future travel. Lastly, I made what is a fatal error in changing my departure date by a single day without changing the policy. That apparently invalidates it. I may no longer bother with comprehensive insurance, and stick to medical only, as it appears to be an unnecessary expense given the myriad ways a claim can be denied. Although I shudder to think of the all the ways a company could escape paying a large medical claim.

In November of 2019, I purchased an entire plan to protect and safeguard my investment and safety; Interruption, Cancellation and Cancel For Any Reason. While in Iceland during March 2020, Covid 19 interrupted our once in a lifetime vacation. Our flight was cancelled, we had to purchase more tickets and we were required to fly into a designated quarantine airport and then ordered by the CDC and DHS to quarantine at home, which we did. The CDC website states a quarantine will take place at home. The DHS (Department of Homeland Security) website states that all US passenger returning from Iceland will be quarantined. The John Hancock policy (managed by Seven Corners in Indiana) states in section (n) states: “If You and/or Your Traveling Companion are hijacked, “quarantined”, required to serve on a jury, subpoenaed, required to appear as a witness in a legal action, provided You or Your Traveling Companion are not a party to the legal action or appearing as a law enforcement officer; the victim of felonious assault; having Your principal place of residence made inaccessible and uninhabitable by a Natural Disaster; or burglary or vandalism of Your principal place of residence “within 10 days of departure”, they would pay for a Trip Interruption claim. The policy only says to be quarantined and we were quarantined within 10 days of our departure. For some reason, Seven Corners Claims Adjusters have turned a blind eye and denied my claim twice. They manufactured phrases to persuade me to accept the denial. I recently made a 3rd appeal and filed a Civil Remedy complaint against the company for Bad Faith and deliberately delaying my claims for over 3 months. If I can travel again, I will never purchase a policy from John Hancock again. John Hancock/Seven Corners should be ashamed of how they treat customers the way that they have during this unprecedented Pandemic. Please keep in mind that insurance companies like John Hancock know that most people will give up on a denial, that’s why they’re multibillion-dollar companies. If you have the time, do not give up and fight for what’s just.

They state on their website they are refunding for canceled trips without claims due to Covid. It is been 10 weeks and I have not received anything except excuses. I will not purchase from them again.

    Thank you for your feedback.

I am happy to see that Nationwide did refund your premium. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and current climate of traveling this request did take much longer than usual.

We hope you will reach out to us at InsureMyTrip for future travel insurance needs.

Do not do business with this company! Truly the worst experience with an insurance company I ever had. The company denied my claim because: “United Airlines indicates the purchased airline tickets have a credit value that can be applied toward future travel. A credit is not considered a loss until the credit is no longer available for use. United has indicated the credit is valid for one year from the issue date. The issue date is November 20, 2019. Additionally, they have indicated change fees would be waived for these tickets if exchanged. In the event the credit remains unused and is not reissued prior to the expiration date, please contact iTI® at 866.243.7524 once the credit has expired for further claim consideration. Documentation will be required from the United Airlines stating credit has expired and was not used.”

This decision is not only at odds with public policy on corporate responsibility in an unprecedented business environment, but is incorrect for the following legal reasons:
1. I purchased non-refundable airline tickets for a trip that we preemptively canceled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic using the Cancel for Any Reason provision within our policy. Had we not taken these preemptive measures to protect our family and fellow world citizens out of an abundance of caution, we would have been entitled to a full refund of the airfare when the flight was officially canceled.
2. I was unable to find an explicit stipulation that a non-refundable airline travel credit must expire before a claim can be filed identified in the terms and conditions of my policy. Moreover, while the “loss” they referred to as basis for denial is not a defined term in my insurance policy, it is generally accepted that a loss refers to the monetary injury that results from the occurrence of the contingency for which the insurance was taken out. There is no situation that will occur to make non-refundable travel credits refundable. These credits cannot legitimately be construed as monetary currency, and as such we incurred the loss on the date we canceled the flights.
3. We specifically indicated on the Authorization form of our claim that we will not be using our airline tickets and included a copy of the electronic ticket confirmation which included the ticket numbers as appropriate. It is our expectation that the company would follow standard business practice and request the airline void any non-refundable credits pursuant to the claim and pay out on the legitimate claim submitted. We are absolute in our statement that we will not ever use these credits, as we do not plan to travel by plane at any time in the foreseeable future.

The Company denied my appeal without addressing the points noted above, instead citing general policy language regarding irrelevant terms, which explicitly construed were satisfied - very bizarre.

Due to COVID19 I could not do my trip to Brazil. I contacted customer service and was asked to submit my flight cancellation documentation. I did that and then got another request asking my for a copy of all the pages in may passport so that they could have irrefutable evidence that I had not been to Brazil. I wrote back stating that I am a dual citizen (Brazil and US) and that even if I had taken the trip to Brazil, my Brazilian passport would show no entry or exit stamp since for Brazilian citizens the immigration process is fully automated and no stamps are placed on the passport. At the end, no refund or offer to provide me a credit for future trips is what I was told. Very unfortunate that a global company like Tokyo Marine has not updated their internal customer support policies to account for the fact that there are many dual citizens in the world who are frequent travelers who do not fit their mode. No more Tokyo Marine insurance purchases from me any more. And since I am a frequent buyer of travel insurance, I will certainly make sure to share my experience with all my other fellow globe trotters.

We had to cancel our trip on March 2nd due to illness. This was at the beginning of the Covid 19 pandemic. It took a few weeks longer than usual for the claim to start being processed (which was very understandable). But once the agent opened the case, the process took about a week to complete. Then once fully approved, we received a check for the full amount of insurance claim in 3 days. Outstanding service!

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Luxury Cruise
We purchased the Luxury Policy through Nationwide for our retirement trip of a lifetime. We were to be gone 2.5 months. It included a 21 day cruise and then island hopping around French Polynesia, then flying to Australia to go to the Great Barrier Reef. Our cruise began in Sydney Australia on 2/28/20, we were supposed to disembark in Tahiti on 3/20/20. Due to COVID-19, our cruise was interrupted and we were sent home from Hawaii. We had 4 flights included in the covered cost of our policy: the flight to Sydney, island hopping flights around French Polynesia, the flight from Tahiti to Cairns, the flight from Cairns back to our home in California. We were fortunate and obtained refunds on two of the flights we did not utilize (thank you Air Tahiti and Expedia). The third, the flight from Tahiti to Cairns was not refunded and was denied by coverage by Nationwide. They said they do not cover pre-purchased flights that you are not able to utilize after a trip interruption. They would only be covered in the event of a trip cancellation. The total we are out is $1,246. I have to say, I'm not impressed! When you insure the value of a trip, including all of the costs that are non-cancellable and non-refundable, the coverage should reimburse for the insured costs that a traveler is out of pocket. They refuse to do so. I also acknowledge that some policies do not cover the expenses due to a pandemic, that is not the case with our policy because we purchased it in October, 2019, long before we had heard of COVID-19. Buyer, be careful to determine what is covered and what is not. I have purchased 5 or 6 Nationwide Luxury Cruise policies in the past and not had any issues. This is a first, but after paying $814 in premium to cover a 2.5 month trip and coming home after 1 month, and finding out that they will not reimburse me for this flight, I'm very disappointed in the Nationwide Luxury Cruise policy coverage.
