Cannot speak to how well they handle claims as we had no need to file one . We chose this company as it allowed us to buy the coverage we needed without having to buy coverage for a lot of items we didn't need (such as coverage that might be needed outside of the US). There were still some items (we are retired so wouldn't need the loss of job coverage) but it would be hard to have a policy designed just for us with out increasing the overall cost due to added manpower needed for such policies.

Generali Global Assistance Preferred
Although nothing untoward occurred during our travels that may have required our receiving insurance benefits, just having the coverage gave us peace of mind which enhanced our enjoyment.

Generali Global Assistance Standard
Having had the good fortune of not filing a claim for my trip, this is a review of the contract document, not its implementation. One reason I chose this plan was because I felt the contract document was well written, well organized, and easier to understand than those of other trip insurance companies.

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Prime
When we filed a plan for trip interruption, they did eventually pay but their communication was terrible (basically none) and it took longer than promised. The payout was less than half of what we claimed based on how they classified it so it wasn't overall a great experience. You can't say it was clearly wrong but it wasn't a very satisfying handling of the claim.

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Essential
The Nationwide Essential Plan worked well as to coverage and cost. However, it took about 2 months to receive compensation for losses. I had to re-submit twice some of the documents because they were on the website in my emails and the format was not what they could read. So be careful to save all trip documents and in a PDF format or at least a Word format so they can read them. It took 2-3 weeks the first time before they even contacted me about re-submitting some of the claims, then another 2 weeks for the second round. Finally, I hadn't heard anything for 2 weeks or so again, and a check shows up in the mail. So the plan works but you have to be very patient to get your coverage if you have a loss.

I was happy not to have to file a claim. My review is based on that fact so I can't say if claim coverage was good or not, John Hancock is a reputable firm, so I would have to believe that they do what they say.

AIG Travel Travel Guard MedEvac Plan
When traveling abroad, it is essential to have insurance for medical expenses or medical evacuation, which are not covered by Medicare and most health insurance. On a trip to Turkey, a woman in our group had appendicitis. She did not have travel insurance. She had only Medicare and a secondary health insurance plan, neither of which covered any expenses outside the U.S. She could not afford to pay for an air ambulance to have surgery back in the U.S. So she had surgery in Istanbul. Her adult daughter stayed with her, and paid out of pocket hotel room and restaurant meals while her mother was in the hospital. They had to pay up front for her medical care and hospitalization. Presumably they had to pay a high airfare home when she was well enough to travel. I always buy travel insurance. My credit card (co-branded with an airline's frequent flyer program) covers trip cancellation and interruption when I charge flights, hotels, cruises, etc. to that card (even if it's a different airline). However, that credit card does not cover medical treatments, hospitalization, or evacuation to the U.S. in case of illness or accident. This AIG Travel Guard MedEvac Plan is very reasonably priced and covers that gap including expenses for a traveling companion. Thankfully my companion and I have not needed medical treatment while traveling, but having this coverage gives us peace of mind.
