The Silver plan is the mid-level policy offered by John Hancock and may be ideal for families traveling with children, as kids 17 and under are free as long as one parent is covered under the plan. Coverage is offered if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip for a typical covered reason which can range from an unforeseen illness, injury or death to your destination being made uninhabitable by a natural disaster. The Silver plan does offer higher limits of coverage than the Bronze plan for Baggage, Travel Delay, Medical and Emergency Medical Evacuation.

I can't comment on how well the plan covered my medical expenses since I had no claim. Until you have a claim I believe you don't know how good a plan is. I needed a plan to cover helicopter skiing and this one was reported to do so.

    The John Hancock Silver plan does cover helicopter skiing with the inclusion of the Hazardous Sports Option. This rider, when added to the policy for an additional premium, provides coverage for "leisure and non-professional sports activities in: bungee cord jumping; rock climbing; mountain climbing up to 4,572 meters (15,000 feet), scuba diving for Qualified Divers up to a maximum depth of 40 meters (131 feet) and for Unqualified Divers up to a maximum depth of 30 meters (98 feet), white or black water rafting (Grades 1-4), back country or off-trail skiing or snowboarding (except as designated unsafe by the resort management), parachuting or skydiving, helicopter skiing, extreme skiing or snowboarding; spelunking or caving.

I wanted to add the option for coverage for "Cancellation For Any Reason" 2 weeks before the trip, but was not allowed to. Disappointing.

The John Hancock Silver plan offers an optional Trip Cancellation For Any Reason benefit which can be added onto the policy for an additional premium if selected within 14 days after making the initial trip payment. Unfortunately, the benefit was not selected at the time of purchase, and was not requested until more than 14 days following the initial trip payment.

    Cancel For Any Reason reimburses between 50% - 75% of the pre-paid and nonrefundable trip cost insured if:

    1) the policy is purchased with the benefit included within 10-30 days after making the initial trip payment (time frame depends upon specific policy)

    2) the full cost of all non-refundable prepaid travel arrangements in insured on the policy

    3) the trip is cancelled at-least 2 days prior to the Scheduled Departure Date.
