If anyone thinks that "Nationwide is on your side", think again. I bought a travel insurance policy for a cruise in February. It was the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company Essential plan. There were 5 of us on the policy. We traveled to Montreal International Airport in two cars from Plattsburgh N.Y. There was a terrible accident and one of our cars was caught behind the wreck. My family members helped comfort the victims at the accident scene until the ambulances arrived. They ended up missing the flight. They went back to Plattsburgh and caught a flight the following night to make the cruise. When we returned from the trip I called the company who handles the claims for Nationwide. I explained what happened and right from the start, the agent tried to talk his way out of paying any of the benefits. First he said that I would need a copy of the accident report. I told him that the accident was in Canada and that our party was not involved. After going back and forth with the agent over the phone, he agreed that the flight booked the next day to get to the ship was covered under the plan. I sent him all of the paper work he needed. About three weeks later, I received an e-mail stating that I would need an accident report or an article from a Canadian newspaper. I called and explained again the the accident was in another country and we had no idea where to get one. The agent said that he would try to "Google it" to see if he could find it. On March 24th, I received three $150.00 checks with the notation that the total flight cost exceeds the maximum benefit allowed for a trip delay per person. The policy clearly states that the cost of a flight to get to to the desired location is covered. I have a family member who is a lawyer and is going to assist me in filing a complaint with the New York State Department of Financial Services. He said the policy is ambiguous and misleading. The flight cost was a total of $920.00 for the three passengers. I will continue to provide updates when they happen. With all of the problems that everyone is facing right now, you would think that a company of this size would do the right thing. ATTENTION, I called Insuremytrip to see if their Anytime Advocates program could help me out. Their customer care representative stated that Nationwide is one company that they can not help me because of an agreement with them,.

Due to Coronavirus, I purchased "Cancel for Any Reason" plan for my honeymoon trip for "just in case".
I canceled a week prior to my trip (to be on the safe side), I submitted my claim with all asked documents the same day I canceled everything. I received a refund check for 75% of whatever cost that was not refunded to me by airline/agency after 3 weeks. Highly recommend this company.

Reading the plan at home, we needed better knowledge about whether the plan offered complete return of money if the trip had been cancelled in the beginning or close to the end. MAKE THE POLICY MUCH CLEARER AS TO THE MONEY RETURNED IF TRIP CANCELLED OR CANCELLED NIN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRIP

The website was down for weeks and phone calls were not answered. When I did reach them, I was promised an email with a link to file a claim. They could not send the form to file by email or USPS. I never received an email. Very poor service and disastrous that they had no backup plan for an IT failure of this magnitude.

We booked a trip Feb. 12, 2020 and purchased insurance Feb. 14, 2020. Due to the corona virus we canceled the trip. We called Travelex to make a claim.. The Travelex agent told us the corona virus was NOT a covered reason for trip cancellation, so they would not make any payment.

A change in the cruise itinerary dis embarkation city was caused by the Covid-19 situation, yet the insurance company totally disregarded this as a legitimate reason for the claim. They only covered the additional costs (most of it had been reimbursed by the cruise line) in the change of airfare. No additional expenses that were incurred because of the change in flight to return home were covered. They claimed that I could not file as flight delay (it was a totally different flight from a totally different city) since I arrived home less than 12 hours from the original flight time (it was 11 hours).

SAVE YOUR MONEY...Due to the Coronavirus, we were told to purchase the extra coverage for Cancel for No Reason. We had to head home early from our trip to Cartagena, Columbia due to different reasons within our group of 8. IE:
-The couple paying for the villa had to leave due to a babysitter issue at home
- I started with a horrible headache, chills, sore throat, ear ache (visited doctor same day I got back and was diagnosed with flu, strep throat and an ear infection)
-airlines that 4 of the people in our group were booked with started cancelling all flts
-we couldn't get a hold of our airline
-owner of the villa we were staying "recommended we leave" as she couldn't guarantee she could keep it staffed
-another member of our group re injured a previous injury/surgery to her hamstring and was immobile.
Thus being said, the insurance is claiming this is all Coronavirus issues and will not honor any of the contract including Trip Interruption.
I ALSO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT WE WE UNABLE TO REACH INSUREOURTRIP BEFORE MAKING THE DECISION TO LEAVE AND FOR 5 DAYS AFTER OUR RETURN

We are sorry to hear you had trouble getting in touch with us and that your trip was interrupted. Our call volume in March topped out around 200%. We would also like to advise that when on a trip needing assistance, you will want to call the provider's 24 hour assistance line. As brokers we will not be able to assist you in this situation.
Please see the response from C&F Travel Insured regarding your review:
"Thank you for your feedback. Our apologizes for the frustrations you’ve experienced. Call volumes are very high, but every customer experience is important to us. We appreciate your patience."
I became a fan of travel insurance after a friend had to be medically evacuated from Mexico during a cruise due to kidney stones. The price was right for the coverage I wanted, especially medical evacuation. You never know how good a plan is until you need to use it and I haven't had to use one yet.
